Productivity 0

Lately distractions have plagued my work to the point where I need to do something about them rather than continuing to hope it will just get better. The danger zone for me is the time between prompting an agent and waiting for the response. That clear break is an opportunity to switch to something else, leaving myself with decision to do something productive or not. And my feeble brain can only win that battle so many times. Agents changed this because of their async nature, meaning this decision happens far more frequently than in the pre-agent world. Although I don’t know what the best solution to this is I thought I would start with making the obvious bad behaviour more difficult and less visible. By doing the following:

  • Blocking specific problem websites
  • Disabling all desktop notifications
  • Listening to pink noise
  • Keeping my phone off my desk

The next step is to make the right things easier to do, but that requires knowing what the right things are, which is an entirely different problem.

Coming up with good metrics for this is actually hard. For now I will stick with reducing dumb website opens.

As of November 4th I have opened dumb websites 411 times in the past 2 weeks we will see how this goes.
